Building a Life That Holds You While You Grow

For the woman who built something real and is quietly wondering when she gets to be herself again.

An invitation, not a wake-up call.

From the outside, your life looks right. The roles you carry. The things you've built. The version of you the world sees. So why does something still feel off?

Rooted and Rising is an honest, deeply human invitation to stop performing a life and start living one. In a world that praises endurance and mistakes exhaustion for ambition, this book offers something different — a path back to yourself, grounded in presence, self-trust, and the quiet courage to stop carrying what was never yours to hold.

Each chapter opens with a Yoruba proverb passed down from the author's mother and the elder women in her family — wisdom that has been quietly carrying us for generations.

"You don't rise by leaving yourself behind. You rise by standing fully where you are."

Written for six women.

All of these women are, in many ways, the same woman — at different points on the same journey. Wherever you are standing right now, something in these pages belongs to you.

i.
The Searching Woman
Celebrated publicly and exhausted privately. Who has slowly, without meaning to, removed herself from the list of people she gives to.
ii.
The Arrived Woman
Fully, genuinely, beautifully arrived. Who does not need fixing — only seeing. This book is her permission slip.
iii.
The Climbing Woman
Reaching, building, climbing with everything she has. This book says to her: start rooting now, before you arrive somewhere you no longer recognize.
iv.
The Quiet Builder
Whose work is her home, her children, her aging parents, her art, her faith, her own becoming. What she is building is enough.
v.
The Uncharted Woman
Not a wife, not a mother, not on any timeline she was handed. Whose real life is the one she is already living.
vi.
The Space-Holder
The coach, the facilitator, the leader who reads with a highlighter. This book was designed to travel — to circles, to teams, to conversations that matter.

Wisdom passed down.

I am Yoruba. I am Nigerian-American. I was raised by a mother and a chorus of elder women who spoke wisdom the way other people speak weather. A proverb was not decoration. It was instruction. It was correction. It was love, compressed into something small enough to carry and durable enough to last.

Ìka ò dọ́gba.
The fingers are not equal.
Ìwà l'ẹwà.
Character is beauty.
Odò tó jin, kì í ṣàn sókè.
A deep river flows quietly.
Ara l'a bá iṣẹ́.
It is the body we meet work with.
Àkókò l'ọba òtítọ́.
Time is the king of truth.
Bí a bá sọnù, a tún lè rí ojú ọ̀nà.
If one gets lost, one can still find the way again.
A boundary is the surface of the water. It is the line between the world that needs everything from you and the part of you that needs nothing more than to be left alone, briefly, to come back to itself.
